Things to do
-
Wander into the central part of Lisbon for a wide range of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes.
-
Admire the architecture from the main square, people watch while you sip a Mojito at a street-side restaurant or head down to the water to feel the sea breeze in your hair.
-
Try the REAL DEAL Portuguese tarts at any one of the bakeries you'll pass while out wandering.
-
Explore the many castles, towers and museums to learn about the rich history of Portugal.
-
Check out Tram 28 for a beautiful photo opportunity surrounded by the cobblestone streets of Lisbon and beautiful buildings alongside it.
-
Head to Time Out Market for a feast of breakfast, lunch or dinner options (think massive food hall)
-
Head to the famous Pink Street to soak in the nightlife if you fancy a drink or a dance after hours.
Be mindful of
-
Crime! It's unfortunately to say however while I was there I heard of at least 10 people who got robbed at knife point on their nights out. This is more-so something to keep in mind if you're going to be out after hours.
Food & Drink
-
Portugese tarts.
-
Garden Balthazar Caffe.
-
Pink Street (for drinks).
The Positives
-
Lisbon is a suuuper pretty city, lots of unique tiles on the buildings that have your eyes wandering upwards as you walk along the cobblestone streets.
-
There's an amazing range of high quality food including fresh seafood given it's proximity to the water.
-
Lisbon/Portugal has a very vibrant culture and you can feel it the minute you step out of the airport. There's something truly special about this place and it's hard to put into words.
The Negatives
-
Obviously the risk of crime at night time can be a bit scary given my own experiences but overall it doesn't feel unsafe you just have to have to make sure you aren't alone after dark or carrying around anything valuable.
-
Personally I found the airport to be a bit of a nightmare. It was super busy, not enough staff and lots of back and forth between different counters when my ticket wasn't scanning correctly at the customs gate. Not enough to deter me from visiting of course but just something to keep in mind (allow plenty of time to get through customs etc when transiting through).
Final Thoughts and Recommendations
-
I feel like 4 nights was actually a really good amount to spend in Lisbon. There's soo much more of Portugal to see that I'd love to get back to one day however if you're stopping into Lisbon 4 nights will give you enough time to explore.
