Capturing The World - Inspiring To Explore
SINGAPORE
Trip #1
-
Singapore - 6 days.
Accommodation/s
Things to do
-
Explore China Town! It's a bustling hub of delicious food, markets that operate all day and night and plenty of bars to stop and have a drink at. You'll find great souvenirs here to take home with you.
-
Explore Gardens by the Bay - there's so much more there than just the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. I went to the Flower Dome and did the Super Tree Grove walk which had such great views from up top!
-
Shop until you DROP. There are so many shopping centres in Singapore that aren't for the faint of heart. Check out Vivo City, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and Bugis Junction just to name a few.
-
Head to Bugis Street Markets to find yourself a bargain (in one very expensive city). They're these super-cool underground type markets that have all sorts of clothing, food, shoes and handbags for bargain prices.
-
Stay on Sentosa Island for at least two or three nights. There's soo much to do there! Such as Universal Studios, Bungee Jumping, the Skyline Luge and much more.
-
Kick back and relax at Palawan Beach or Soliso Beach. Both are great options to cool off from Singapore's hot weather!
-
Allow a few extra hours to eplore the Changi Airport - it is a whoooole thing (and much more than an airport). Keep in mind you will want to go to the Jewel part of the airport, this is where all the magic happens. It's a multi-level shopping centre essentially with a huge waterfall in the middle of it. There's a butterfly garden, a sky walk, a cinema and heaps of shops and dining options.
-
Catch the Singapore Cable Car to catch some of the best views on offer.
Be mindful of
-
Make sure when using rideshare in Singapore that you have selected to pay with your card. I got caught out at the end of a trip without any cash and I'd selected on the app that I'd be paying in cash by complete accident. I'd suggest using Gojeck as your rideshare service over there, I always found them punctual and reliable.
-
Singapore is vvvery expensive. Not exxy enough to not visit (although I know this is a deal breaker for some people) but just be prepared, take a fair bit of money with you just in case as there's so much to see and do (and buy) it'll be hard to say no once you're there.
-
It's very hot in Singapore in the warmer months. Make sure you wear a hat and sunscreen if you're going to be out exploring all day like I was. You don't want to risk getting sunburnt in that heat I tell you what.
Food & Drink
-
Explore the Hawker Centres for the authentic and local cuisines!
-
Hit up China Town and Little India for some delicious food options.
-
There's also heaps of western food for those of you (like me) who prefer the tastes from home. Such as Shake Shack, Burger King, McDonalds, Subway etc.
The Positives
-
It's only a 7 to 8 hour flight from Australia!
-
Everyone speaks English so it's super easier to get around and communicate with the locals.
-
It's a very clean and safe city (everyone told me this but as a solo female traveller in Singapore I can confirm it definitely felt that way).
-
It's an awesome blend of 'old' meets 'new' world. It's a super modern city with a bustling CBD but also has the authentic feel of the local culture and history.
-
Sentosa Island feels like another country in itself. It's like a holiday playground for singles, couples and families with a range of activities for everyone.
-
I found the people to all be very friendly and approachable - adding to that feeling of being safe no matter what time of day I was out and about.
The Negatives
-
The only thing I can fault about Singapore is just how expensive everything is. This will never be a deal breaker for me but it did hurt the bank account a little bit!
Final Thoughts and Recommendations
-
For my very first official solo trip (asides from my two nights in Sweden) Singapore felt like a big warm hug. I felt safe, it's a nice modern destination, public transport is super easy, it had all my familiar foods while still having it's own authentic flair and there are heaps of foreigners out and about exploring so I never felt alone. It's a great destination for solo female travellers or anyone embarking on a holiday by themselves (or anyone travelling with others for that matter).
